There Will Be Blood tops them all

I had to revamp my top movies of 2007.

The reason?

Paul Thomas Anderson’s masterpiece There Will Be Blood has now found itself perched right there at the top. Nominated Tuesday for eight Academy Awards, it deserves to win in every category.

So here’s the new list:

10. Grindhouse
9. Atonement
8. Superbad
7. Juno
6. Sweeney Todd
5. Once
4. The Darjeeling Limited
2(a). No Country for Old Men
2 (b). Into the Wild
1. There Will be Blood

And here’s my official review of There Will Be Blood:

Bold.
Brutal.
Brilliant.

Speaking of the Academy Awards, I’ll no doubt offer up more thoughts and official predictions closer to the actual ceremony, but for now, I’m trying to make sense of what happened.

I managed to pick 19 of the 30 main nominations (Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress), which I think isn’t half bad for such a wide-open year.

Although I ultimately picked Michael Clayton and Juno to make the five nominees for Best Picture, I would have preferred either to have taken a backseat to Sweeney Todd (Clearly, based on the above list, I would have wanted Once, Darjeeling and Into the Wild to be there, but they never stood a chance).

Right now, I’m guessing Atonement has the early lead, followed by No Country. Blood, however, could come on strong, and I’m hoping it gets the win. Look, I know these things don’t really matter (after all, Crash won Best Picture), but I’m such a fan of Paul Thomas Anderson that I want him to get this honor.

So what did you think of the nominations?
