Some days are better than others

I have been known to wish my life unfolded like a movie.

The past two days were better than anything anyone could have written, even if it was to be directed by someone like Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson or P.T. Anderson.

I’ve had back-to-back perfect days.

Wednesday, well, let’s just say that life sometimes calls for bold steps. I think they’ll pay off. Fate and destiny are funny things, I guess. And long, unexpected trips can be journeys worth taking again and again.

As for Thursday, while it wasn’t the most cheerful of reasons to gather β€” our dear friend The Drake β€” is joining the Navy come March 25 β€” we made sure to focus on the good times. With the usual suspects rounded up for trivia in Winchester, we played The Drake’s favorite music, bought him drinks and shots and just generally gave him a send-off worthy of a friend like him.

And so, today, tonight and tomorrow, let’s celebrate friends, new and old.

No Surrender
by Bruce Springsteen
(Note: if you click on the link, the live version is the more emotional choice)

We busted out of class had to get away from those fools
We learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school
Tonight I hear the neighborhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you’re tired and you just want to close your eyes and follow your dreams down

We made a promise we swore we’d always remember
No retreat no surrender
Like soldiers in the winter’s night with a vow to defend
No retreat no surrender

Now young faces grow sad and old and hearts of fire grow cold
We swore blood brothers against the wind
I’m ready to grow young again
And hear your sister’s voice calling us home across the open yards
Well maybe we could cut someplace of our own
With these drums and these guitars

Blood brothers in the stormy night with a vow to defend
No retreat no surrender

Now on the street tonight the lights grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There’s a war outside still raging
you say it ain’t ours anymore to win
I want to sleep beneath peaceful skies in my lover’s bed
with a wide open country in my eyes
and these romantic dreams in my head

We made a promise we swore we’d always remember
No retreat no surrender
Like soldiers in the winter’s night with a vow to defend
No retreat no surrender.

See ya soon, friend.

  1. Wonderful post… we couldn’t have asked for a better evening. Not just for The Drake, but for every single person involved.
